FROM THE STUDIO
"A great night is coming to a close. The lights are still low and there is the occasional muffled scrape of chairs on the floor as people reluctantly head toward the door. They want to hold onto the special feeling they got tonight… That new thing they heard. The piano player is noodling something out on the keys. Improvising. The other guys are packing up, but the trumpet player lingers near the piano, listening. Wondering if he’s going to slide in with a couple of notes. I was listening to Miles Davis’ Kind Of Blue and Bill Evans’ Waltz For Debbie during most of these paintings. I was trying to learn from the dynamics of the music and apply those same characteristics to my work. I think these paintings capture the architecture of the music and of the various stages found in jazz clubs. The citrus takes the place of the players on the stage surrounded by dark atmosphere and enclosed in that quiet place of introspection. I took chances with this work. It feels mysterious to me. But, like live music, these paintings leave room for you, the audience, to bring something to them." Embrace Beauty, KNight |
